We were approached by the city architect of Frýdek-Místek, Lucie Šidlová, regarding collaboration on the construction adjustments of the bus stop at the former central bus platform in Frýdek-Místek.
With the relocation, the overall required capacity was reduced, leading to the basic idea of shortening the original 54-meter-long shelter of the bus stop.
On the issue of whether to utilize parts of the existing structure, we, along with the city leadership and the city architect, agreed to preserve it. Almost every resident of the city and surrounding area is familiar with this stop, whether from their student days or daily life. The original shelter structure, which concealed a wooden screen with integrated benches for individual stations, dates back to the 1980s.
The structure was reduced to 3 column modules (18 m), corresponding to 2 bus stations.
In the design, we emphasized making the wait for the bus more pleasant with a view of the adjacent Smetanovy Sady and ensuring adequate wind protection. The original wooden screens were replaced with screens made of safety glass mounted on steel columns that respect the original structural module along with the integrated bench. Considering the requirements of ornithologists, we thought about how to elegantly address safety markings against bird strikes. We utilized a repeating motif of a pair of waves that is derived from the visual style of the city.
The benches are made from oak beams, painted with a clear oil stain. All elements—from the structure of the object to the fittings such as trash cans or the frame for the digital information panel—are harmonized in a common anthracite color. The new roofing consists of light gray trapezoidal aluzinc sheets that reflect lighting in the evening hours. The infiltration rings at the back have been replaced, which drain rainwater from the downspouts and will, over time, be covered with climbing plants.
The walking surface, defining the waiting area, is made of concrete striations. The expansion joints in the surface align with the axes of the load-bearing columns. From the edge of the roof outwards, it continues on an asphalt sidewalk. The surface of the bus bay is made from prefabricated reinforced concrete slabs.
