The building of the employment office in Dessau was a social-democratic achievement of the then Weimar Republic. In 1927, the "Act on Labor Mediation and Unemployment Insurance" was approved. A new type of building caring for people seeking jobs was thus needed. In 1927, Bauhaus director Walter Gropius won the invited architectural competition
(also participated by Hugo Häring and Bruno Taut - translator's note). Together with his studio, he realized the employment office in Dessau according to the most modern architectural, technical, and functional aspects.
Despite all the accusations and proposals for demolition during the Nazi era, the employment office has remained preserved to this day with much of its original furnishings.
With the support of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, the Federal Republic of Germany, the city of Dessau, and the company Lotto-Toto GmbH Sachsen Anhalt, the building was reconstructed under monument protection from 2000 to 2003. Today, the building again serves a public purpose as the regulatory and transportation office of the city of Dessau.
The shape and layout of the building derive from a clear functional concept. Job seekers were divided by gender and occupation into six entrances leading into the office. Waiting rooms, advisory rooms, and social counters were arranged to allow for non-conflicting and as smooth a public flow as possible.
A modern steel skeleton was used as the construction structure, which was bricked with sharply fired yellow bricks. A shed roof and a horizontal light ceiling made of prismatic glass were used for natural lighting of the interior spaces and hall. A special color concept was created for all interior spaces
(not only the painting, but also the furniture and lighting design came from the workshops of Bauhaus - translator's note).
If possible, the outdoor areas were also restored to their original form during the reconstruction. The access ramp with a protective shelter, on the other hand, are new constructions created for the needs of the transport company. The wooden windows on the outer wall
(originally fitted with strip windows with steel profiles - translator's note) as well as the later bicycle shelter from 1936 were left unchanged for functional reasons, but also as a testament to the traces left on the building throughout history.
