Peas from old pint mugs! The winning design of the competition "OBJECT FROM GLASS FOR BRNO" announced by the Brno brewery Starobrno. The object is a tribute to Johann Gregor Mendel, a personality associated with Brno and the monastery in Old Brno, which neighbors the Brno brewery. The object is owned by a private entity, HEINEKEN Česká republika, a.s., and nearly every year it illuminates Mendel Square on Green Thursday!

It was first lit on October 24, 2013.

The Starobrno brewery organized a competition for the artistic processing of old pint mugs on the occasion of the presentation of the new pint mug – a stein. The theme of the object was to be connected with Brno or its residents. J. G. Mendel, the father of modern genetics, and peas were an obvious choice, not only due to their local connection to the brewery but mainly because he is a world-renowned figure intrinsically linked to Brno, whose legacy is still insufficiently commemorated. J. G. Mendel still does not have any representative statue or monument in Brno.

The Pea Mug is an object in the shape of a giant pea. The sphere, measuring 2.7 m, is created using a steel structure adorned with 552 pieces of glass pint mugs. The object is illuminated from the center with green light, creating a stunning light installation.

The pint mugs are attached to the structure in groups of six, thus forming the shape of a sphere. Thanks to the optical properties of the glass and the powerful green light, the Pea Mug shines in the evening and nighttime hours, becoming a temporary landmark of Mendel Square. Since beer glass is not a suitable material for outdoor use from the perspective of safety and durability, the installation is only temporary, and people can admire it in Mendel Square until the first frosts, when it is moved from the public space to its winter quarters in the brewery.
