The story of the house in the Old Town is the second chapter of the collaboration between our studio and the family from Frýdek-Místek, for whom we have already designed one family house. The work on the design, however, was significantly more important and, in many ways, more challenging.
The plot for building a family house in a typical suburban development is interesting primarily due to the view of the distant panorama of the Beskydy Mountains. This strong advantage, however, could only be highlighted from the second floor, as the view from the ground is obstructed by mature trees. The investor's wish to keep the program of the house on one floor was thus in mild opposition to our vision of utilizing the silhouette of the Beskydy. However, the views and sightlines ultimately became characteristic and guiding elements for this project.
Sightlines lead and direct a person with any movement through the house. In the shorter axis of the rectangular floor plan, the view into the garden is significant. In the longer one, there are sightlines to green nooks, views beyond the light. Functionally, the house is thus divided by these viewing axes into a communal and private part, with the longer axis dividing the house into rooms – oriented to the south – and a service area – oriented to the north. A characteristic feature of the realization is the "resting area" on the roof, which connects the house with the distant horizon, dominated by Lysá hora - more than an ordinary hill in the region. This element shapes, or rather deforms, the roof and thus gives rise to an unmistakable silhouette. Inside, the "nook" is connected to the main living space, which brings generosity and spatial playfulness to the room.
Material-wise, the house refers to "family tradition" – meaning that the principle of the previous realization for the client is repeated here. The main expressive element is also the brick cladding, which is complemented by wooden slats applied to the simple mass of the garage.
