Housing estate Biberhaufenweg
Address: Biberhaufenweg 15, Wien, Austria
Investor:ÖSW
Project:1981-83
Completion:1981-85

The Biberhaufenweg housing estate represented a departure from traditional Viennese social housing in the early 1980s. It was not an extensive complex where dozens of families could move in, but rather it offered the spatial generosity of intimate family living in the suburbs. A quartet of Viennese studios contributed to the residential complex in the 22nd district. The design of the central square is credited to Heinz Tesar, the side alleys to Otto Häuselmayer, the residential buildings in the foreground to Wafler Architekten, and the angled row houses in the back to Carl Pruscha. The aim of these renowned architectural names was to elevate the average development on the periphery. The project was preceded by thorough preparation involving the organization of workshops and urban planning analyses. The result is a most varied spectrum of housing typologies and also one of the first examples of "small architecture" solved in detail.
