Sport complex in Sazovice
Architect: Pavel Mudřík
Collaboration:Pavel Krampla, Milan Nečas, Marian Lanc
Investor:MRB Sazovice
Project:2008-09
Completion:2009-10

The sports complex was already in Sazovice earlier, but over time it completely deteriorated and disappeared. The tradition and memory remained. Given the size of the municipality, it is an especially extensive area of built-up space, defined by a road and stream on opposite sides and surrounding houses. The investor entered the original space with new energy. The condition was to preserve the existing pool basin and changing room building. The new complex should renew and expand summer activities at the swimming pool and also create quality sports and relaxation options with a new restaurant.
The investor's requirements were spatially ambitious. The location in the center of the village between houses required the creation of a concept of light, transparent object density. The new buildings should appear relaxed, even vacation-like, yet at the same time permanent and clear. The organization of the space is subordinate to the area of the swimming pool, which will continue to offer some facilities for year-round use even after the summer season ends. These include a children's playground, athlete changing rooms, a sauna with wellness, and an outdoor café. The entire complex also includes two mini-football fields with artificial turf, a summer tennis court with artificial grass, and a multifunctional court (football, basketball, volleyball, floorball) with barriers for winter ice hockey. A yet unrealized covered hall for tennis and mini-football, along with separate buildings for the restaurant, outdoor refreshments, changing rooms with wellness, and storage also belong to the area. The land still accommodated parking spaces. A significant disadvantage is the existing position near the stream, where there once was a mill race. The complex is thus potentially threatened by flooding.
A thorough drainage system was implemented across the area, the elevation of most areas was raised, and all technical conditions, such as wastewater treatment plants, transformer stations, and all connections to utility networks were ensured.
Compared to the roadway, the complex is "sunken about three meters." This is utilized in the concept of setting the main restaurant building with a vehicular access bridge and a cantilever of the transverse support building. Further away from the road, the main transparent mass of the restaurant is placed "into the wind" on pillars, and it connects with a transverse section that just touches it. The exposed concrete frame structure allows for maximum transparency of the volume. Inside the frame is a timber structure, revealing larch shingle wall coverings and glass surfaces on the outside. The frame on the southern side is cantilevered for its entire length, creating a generous terrace with a fixed transparent cover. The floor and ceiling are wooden, made of larch. Access to the restaurant is provided by a steel bridge with a wooden deck. On the other side, on the terrace, a steel staircase leads down to the swimming pool area. The buildings are designed for vehicle access and pedestrian passage. This possibility enhances the volumetric lightness. Under the main building is the entrance to the swimming pool, changing rooms, ticket office, and other necessities. The objects in the swimming pool area (café) have a light, constructive character. A steel frame with concrete and glass-concrete infill is used here. Wooden larch cladding is used in other buildings. The existing changing room building was completely replaced by new structures during the construction. Although the swimming pool basin was utilized, only plain concrete remained, and everything else, including the complete technology, is new. Ultimately, the condition of preserving the basin became a difficulty for the spatial organization concept. Walkable surfaces are made of concrete, from ground concrete and concrete slabs. The wet area for swimming is defined by stepping stones with showers and greenery according to hygiene requirements. The resting area for sunbathing is located behind the shower and refreshment buildings for more tranquility. Maples and lindens were planted in the area for future pleasant shade. The access road is paved, unlike the parking area, which is filled with stone chippings. The complex is freely accessible, with only the swimming pool fenced with mesh. Interior finishes include peeled pine plywood, larch planks, oak strips, Tarkett, and poured floors.
