The airport terminal is often the first place that shapes the impression of the visited country. Here, emotions of welcome and farewell mingle, accompanying us during arrivals and departures. For this reason, Terminal 3 of Prague Airport, primarily used for private flights, has undergone architectural and spatial modifications emphasizing a representative and contemporary appearance.
The revitalization of the terminal respects the existing architectural character of the original building from the 1990s with elements of postmodernism. The expression of the building on the public side ("landside") has been preserved, where the original roofing elements have been refurbished or replaced. The space has further been cultivated by reducing excessive hard surfaces, adding greenery, replacing unused areas with grassy strips, and planting trees and shrubs. This has contributed to the creation of a pleasant and clear anteroom of the terminal. New furniture elements, security stainless steel bollards, and illuminated information pylons have clarified the arrangement of access paths.
On the airside, a new dominant architectural feature has been created – a steel canopy with a unique "web-like" structure. It is composed of equilateral triangles and supported by seven columns shaped like a truncated pyramid. The design of the canopy is also reflected in the form of new staircases and ramps with metal-clad surfaces, creating an elegant and iconic silhouette of the structure, visible from afar. Modifications on the airside also respond to the need to separate operations – new independent entrances have been created for VIPs, excursions, arrivals, and departures, ensuring their operational independence.
Interior modifications focused on the first above-ground floor, which remained in continuous operation even during reconstruction. The new entrance hall, with connecting check-in areas, allows for smooth and intuitive passage through the terminal, while carefully placed relaxation and work zones offer travelers a pleasant environment for waiting.
The concept of the interior is based on simplicity and dignity. The materials used – particularly polished metal, glass, and decorative elements in the VIP area – reflect the significance of the terminal as a representative space. The VIP lounge is accentuated by glass cladding on the columns and specific furniture, while the regular waiting areas are equipped according to Prague Airport standards. Greenery – in the form of walls and solitary elements – complements the calm and cultivated atmosphere of the interior. A separate area has been designated for the protocol lounge featuring a motif of the Czech lion.
The result of the modernization is an elegant and functional terminal that meets the specific requirements for the handling of private flights and provides travelers with a high standard of safety and comfort.
