The archway of tree crowns slowly provides shade. There’s already a place to sit, something to watch, and one can also think. Perhaps about what was, what could be, and what comes next.Nádražní Street began to form in the urban structure of Žďár at the beginning of the 20th century as a connector between today’s Republic Square and the train station building. In the 1950s, the station was moved approximately 450 meters south. However, this did not change the importance of the street; it only resulted in the extension of the street to the new building, which became an impulse for the creation of a new, already modernist urban structure (second half of the 20th century).
The project arises from an architectural competition, the solution of which was Nádražní Street along its entire length from the station building to Republic Square. The concept of the design is based on creating a strong pedestrian axis/promenade on the eastern side of the street between the station and the intersection with Smetanova Street, from where the street continues to the pedestrian zone and to the square.
In the first step of phase II, a section of the street was completed from the roundabout by Ivan towards the post office.
A fundamental change compared to the original state is the relocation of longitudinal parking spaces. These are moved to the eastern side of the street, in the direction of arrival to the city center. The longitudinal parking lane also serves as a dividing element between the roadway and the sidewalk, which will gain significance upon the completion of the entire concept. The parking spaces are supplemented with a row of trees. The sidewalk on the western side of the street, with the potential for the development of civic amenities, is designed to be almost a meter wider than the original state, and it includes a tree row with spaces for urban furniture.
The roadway is 6 meters wide and allows shared passage of cars and cyclists in both directions. The road is supplemented with bike pictograms. In the northern part by the Czech Post building, it was necessary to maintain the original public transport stop locations.
On Husova Street, one parking space for the disabled is inserted on the side of the post office building. The alignment of the roadway is shifted 1.6 meters from the axis of the common street. This creates a deviation that slows down traffic before entering the intersection and provides increased protection for pedestrians in a busy area.
The shape solution corresponds primarily to quality traffic servicing and the passage through the area while maintaining safe operation for all, including cars, cyclists, and pedestrians. Compared to the original state, the individual parts of the space are clearly defined and differentiated in materials.
The material solution partially refers to the already completed
surface modifications of Republic Square (atelier RAW, 2015) and to the surrounding streets of the wider center (Husova and Tyršova Streets). The roadway is asphalt, only in the intersection area is the surface made of granite cubes. This unifies the intersection space, differentiates it from the direct section, and thereby ensures a slowdown in passage in a location with increased pedestrian movement. The longitudinal parking spaces for cars are also paved with the same cubes. Pedestrian crossings and crossing areas are executed in a contrasting ochre shade of the granite cubes. The curbs are stone, 25 cm wide.
During the implementation, increased attention and emphasis were placed on the quality of processing and the execution of individual details and material interfaces.
