<Vršovické podkroví s dotekem slunce> translates to <Vršovice attic with a touch of the sun>
Dark, small, and somewhat cramped space… This could describe a certain attic in Vršovice before it underwent complete renovation under our management. The goal was to invite more sunshine into this apartment – in every conceivable sense.

The floor area of the relatively small room lacked sufficient natural light. The only place where potential was felt from the beginning was the main living area with the kitchen, which achieved a nice height of two floors in the back due to the slanted roof.

So how to tackle the disadvantages and highlight the advantages of this apartment? We found the solution in maximizing openness wherever possible and in optical plays that create a generous impression even in a small area. At the same time, every corner was utilized; for example, in the sloping niche on the side of the living room, a custom-made sofa found its place, with storage spaces beneath the seat cushions.

We used the highest spot of the apartment above the kitchen in an unconventional way by employing a horizontal safety net, into which one can jump after ascending the stairs. The net essentially occupies the entire footprint of the kitchen and, due to its load-bearing capacity, allows for several people to play or relax in it at the same time. It is most popular with children, but observers who want to enjoy the happenings in the kitchen also find it appealing, as they have the opportunity to catch a glimpse of what’s cooking literally from a bird's eye view.

The material solution also aims for maximum airiness, so the predominance of white on the walls was a clear choice. The furniture is mostly made from bleached maple solid wood and is brightened by a single color accent – a yellow upper kitchen cabinet. Yellow is also used as a gradient on the ceiling made of planks in the children's room.

Special attention was given to storage spaces, which were limited in the existing state. We enclosed the space under the stairs, placed a washing machine there, and installed deep pull-out shelves above it. In the bedroom, there was room for a small but efficiently organized wardrobe. Both are covered with massive wooden boards adorned with a cut-out decor of an abstracted (not necessarily our:) solar system.
