We invite you to the second lecture from the Search for Modernism cycle (Searching for Modernism). Soviet modernist architecture is the new hit on social media, being featured in advertisements and music videos. The lecture will discuss the research on the heritage that has recently become part of pop culture, presented by Kyiv architect, photographer, and curator Alex Bykov.
His second lecture will be dedicated to the stories of iconic Kyiv architects, focusing on their professional careers and the ambiguous fates of their projects. Alex Bykov embarked on this research primarily due to the lack of information. His main source of knowledge has been personal meetings and interviews with architects active from 1955 to 1991. Alex not only worked as a journalist but also became a close friend, living with them in the last days of their lives, scanning and systematizing their archives. Many of these interviews have been published in architectural magazines and presented at exhibitions.
Alex Bykov is currently one of the leading Ukrainian experts on the architecture of the post-war modern period. He specializes in the heritage of Soviet urbanism, the latest official and DIY architecture in Ukraine, with particular attention to sacral architecture. He was among the first researchers to identify, popularize, and preserve the heritage of Soviet modernism in Ukraine.
The cycle, in support of Ukrainian artists and scholars, will take place at the Faculty of Architecture on the 25th of April; 2nd of May; and 9th of May. The lectures will be in English.
