Karel Hubáček

Liberec – The small experimental building from 1961 is the family house of architect Karel Hubáček. The reason why this building is today heavily visited by tourists is, of course, the name of the famous architect associated with the congenial connection of Mount Ještěd with the hotel and transmitter into an unmistakable silhouette and symbol of Liberec.

What is its charm? Architects appreciate the bold placement of modernist minimalism in the historical context of the picturesque quarter of German villas, while the broader public is attracted by the preserved interior of living spaces with period furniture design from the sixties and seventies. The pleasant atmosphere of the house is further enhanced by valuable artworks around the central staircase. A unique feature of the building is the fact that it is the first prefabricated family-type house built after 1945. The simple “construction kit” made of cast hollow panels filled with slate, along with the reinforced concrete cantilevered floor on twelve slender columns, is an example of a modern approach combining simplicity with elegance.

In the exhibition space on the modified section of the first floor, you will find a model of the experimental prefabricated house created by architects and modelers from the Atelier next door. “The model depicts the original appearance of the house up to around 1977, when there were still gray construction panels without the later added sprayed plaster and without the wooden formwork and raised roof,” says Luděk Lukuvka, the curator of the object.

The building is not just a motionless “museum” of the architect, although part of the interior includes an exhibition of the architect's work. Continuous reconstruction of the entire building, as well as a large garden, is underway here. This allows for various cultural events, whether outdoor exhibitions, workshops, etc. The North Bohemian Museum, which manages the object, is preparing film screenings with architectural themes and future presentations of architectural developments in the region. Karel Hubáček would undoubtedly wish for the house and garden to be more than just a museum reminder but to live a true creative and inspiring life.

“In the house, we regularly hold guided tours with architect Daniela Kvapilová. Due to the increased interest of visitors, we have added Thursday tours in August, and in September, tours will be held every Sunday,” said Lukuvka. A maximum of 20 people can attend one tour, and bookings can be made at the museum's reception or online. Hubáček's experimental prefabricated house can be found on Alšova Street in Liberec – Harcov.
