In the lecture hall of the National Heritage Institute, regional expert workplace in Ostrava, Odboje 1941/1, Ostrava, the presentation of the book and its namesake lecture will take place on the occasion of the 180th anniversary of the birth of Camillo Sitte. Martin Strakoš - Romana Rosová: Architect Camillo Sitte (1843–1903) and his work in the Ostrava region. The Viennese architect and urban planner Camillo Sitte (1843–1903) is a world-renowned figure and is considered one of the founders of modern urbanism. This year, we will commemorate the 180th anniversary of his birth on April 17, and on November 16, the 120th anniversary of his death. The lecture follows last year's exhibition of the same name, organized by the Ostrava workplace of the National Heritage Institute, and at the same time presents the book - a critical catalogue of the exhibition, showcasing Sitte's work in Ostrava. In the introduction, we will discuss Vienna and its environment in the mid-19th century, when the creative personality of C. Sitte began to form in a society influenced by a generation of architects and artists known as the Circular Boulevard. Even during his university studies, Sitte studied the urbanism and architecture of Italian, French, and German historical cities, and based on this, he later wrote the soon-to-be-famous book Der Städtebau nach seinen künstlerischen Grundsätzen (1889) / The Construction of Cities According to Artistic Principles (the Czech translation was published in 1995 and 2012). After the success of the book, he also established himself outside the Viennese center of the monarchy, most notably in the Czech lands and specifically in the Ostrava region. Similarly to the central part presented in the book, the lecture will focus on an analysis of Sitte's projects for municipalities in the then Ostrava region, namely the regulatory plan for the new center of Přívoz (1893–1901), the regulatory plan for Moravian Ostrava (1897–1903), the regulatory plan for Mariánské Hory (1902–1903), and the regulatory plan for Hrušov (1903), as well as the unrealized project for the church, rectory, and district court of Silesian Ostrava (1897). Particularly in the case of the center of Přívoz, the authors trace the historical development from 1893 to the present day, including the designation of the urban heritage zone Ostrava-Přívoz in 2003, which marks its 20th anniversary this year. The individual phases confront the current state of construction, including photographs by Roman Polášek. The aim of the lecture and the book is to highlight the values of Sitte's work in Ostrava as well as the fact that the rehabilitation of Přívoz represents an ongoing task, not only from the perspective of heritage protection but also from the viewpoint of the architectural culture of the present.
