Galerie VI PER and the Research Center for Industrial Heritage of the Faculty of Architecture CTU invite you to the presentation of the book ATÚ: Automatic Telephone Exchanges: Society, Technology, Architecture.
The collective monograph ATÚ: Automatic Telephone Exchanges: Society, Technology, Architecture provides an overview of the technological, typological, and architectural development of automatic telephone exchanges in Czechoslovakia, addressing the social and political contexts of their emergence and their authors. These expertly designed buildings housed bulky electromechanical devices and at the same time expressed technical progress and the social significance of public telecommunications networks. However, analog systems were soon replaced by digital ones, which no longer required large spaces or human operation. As a result, their buildings lost their purpose, disappearing into the hands of new owners and today represent one of the most endangered categories of industrial heritage.
The editors of the publication are Irena Lehkoživová and Jan Zikmund, with a foreword by Benjamin Fragner. Texts by Lukáš Beran, Petr Freiwillig, Jakub Potůček, Jiří Suchomel, and Barbora Zavadská are complemented by interviews with Jiří Eisenreich and Václav Aulický. The studies are accompanied by period photographs and plans from the collections of Czech and Slovak museums, galleries, press agencies, and personal archives, many of which are published for the first time. The current situation of the key moments of remarkable architectural layers is documented by a unique photographic essay by Viktor Mácha.
The book was created with financial support from the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and the Faculty of Architecture CTU in Prague as part of the project Industrial Architecture of the Second Half of the 20th Century: Extension, Transformation, and Identity (DH23P03OVV016) in the program supporting applied research in the field of national and cultural identity NAKI III.
