Litoměřice - In an architectural and artistic competition for the design of the entrance to Jirásek Gardens in Litoměřice, 39 proposals were submitted. The deadline for submissions ended today at noon. Michaela Rozsypalová, the spokesperson for the city hall, told ČTK. The controversial monument named Honor and Glory to the Soviet Army was relocated by a professional firm from public space to a depot of the former barracks last June.
The evaluation meeting of the jury is provisionally scheduled for March 30. The public is expected to learn the results of the competition in April. The expert jury will assess the proposals anonymously, in accordance with applicable legislation and the competition rules of the Czech Chamber of Architects, the spokesperson stated.
According to representatives of the civic initiative for the removal of the monument Honor and Glory to the Soviet Army, the work was a symbol of the occupation of Czechoslovakia and has nothing to do with the liberation of the country by the Allied forces from Nazism in 1945. The monument was erected in the 1970s. After Russia's invasion of Ukraine, someone modified the front of the pedestal into the shape of a washing machine and painted a stripe of red color on the body of the statue.
