PRAGUE - The competition for a proposal on how Prague's Wenceslas Square should look in the future has sparked great interest. Over 50 architectural teams have picked up the competition conditions at the Prague 1 city hall, and more are applying. Therefore, the competition jury has extended the period during which the conditions can be obtained by one month, jury chairman and councilor Filip Dvořák (ODS) informed ČTK today.
Originally, architects could collect the documents from the beginning to the end of August. Now they can do so until the end of September. The deadline for submitting proposals on October 31 remains unchanged, Dvořák stated.
The current state of the square is not considered satisfactory by representatives of the first city district. Parked cars should primarily disappear from it, with exceptions only for deliveries and the disabled. Architects will also focus on the arrangement and quantity of restaurant gardens, advertising panels, urban furniture, and greenery.
The number of sales stalls should be reduced. Experts will further consider the potential return of trams to the square.
The jury intends to announce the winner of the competition in November. The author of the best proposal will receive one million crowns. Second place will be associated with a sum of half a million crowns, and the reward for third place will be 250,000 crowns.
It is unclear when the central Prague square might change its appearance. This will depend on whether the authorities will have the funds, the cancellation of the so-called north-south highway in front of the National Museum building, and the construction of underground garages beneath the square.
