Prague – Prague 3 will have the firm Studio Reaktor prepare a brief for the tender for the construction of the House of Dance, which is to be built in the unused former spa in Žižkov, for approximately two million crowns without VAT. Last week, the city district council made this decision. The studio created the original architectural study of the project, which needs to be developed into detailed documentation for the tender using the so-called design and build method, where the same company handles the project and also takes on the construction work.
The estimated total costs for the reconstruction of the spa are around 276 million crowns according to previous information. Most of the funding will come from European money; according to the approved document, the Ministry of Culture has already approved a subsidy of 188 million crowns, which will come from the European Recovery and Resilience Facility.
One of the conditions for obtaining European funds, according to the document, is to complete the reconstruction by the end of September 2025; failure to meet the deadline risks the return of the entire subsidy. Due to the tight schedule, the city hall chose the design and build method, which allows for a shorter construction time but requires a very precise tender brief. Given the fact that Studio Reaktor is behind the initial study created for the association Tanec Praha, the city council entrusted them with the preparation of the brief without a tender process.
The project will provide facilities for dance and movement disciplines as well as associated activities for the public. It includes the creation of four dance halls, from a fully equipped technological laboratory to a small studio or yoga room for use by professionals, educational institutions, and the general public. The center will also offer courses, workshops, educational seminars, and other activities. A so-called co-working space, cafe, administrative facilities, workshops for set designers and costume designers, and ideally a sound studio will also be created.
The Žižkov spa was in operation from 1903 and included, among other things, two swimming pools and steam baths. Subsequently, the building served several other purposes. In recent years, the building has been empty.
