Sokolov – The Karlovy Vary Region, along with the energy company Sokolovská uhelná and its sister company SUAS GROUP, is announcing a competition for an urban study of the area around the former mine and today the Medard lake. A leisure and recreation area with accompanying infrastructure and services is to be created here, among other things. The project is part of the renewal and enhancement of the Karlovy Vary Region and the Sokolov area. In the future, it is expected to provide stable job opportunities, create a favorable business environment, and also offer attractive residential housing, SUAS GROUP informed today in a press release.
"The area of the flooded quarry, Medard lake, represents 2,500 hectares ready for a new life. The preparation of the area around Medard lake will lay the foundation for further investments that will bring development to the locality and the entire region and support investment development projects. Our intention is to create a space for the development of leisure activities for our residents and tourism through a gentle and sustainable approach, the construction of new infrastructure, and associated services, including residential housing," said Pavel Tomek, Vice Chairman of the Supervisory Board of SUAS GROUP a.s.
Interested parties can submit their projects for the competition until July 30 of this year. The reason for processing the regional study is the interest of both Sokolovská uhelná and the region in utilizing the potential that this location offers. The study aims to propose a comprehensive concept for the utilization of the area around Medard lake. The main emphasis is placed on ecology, sustainability, and employment.
The area around Medard lake is located northwest of the town of Sokolov and within the municipalities of Svatava, Habartov, Chlum Svaté Maří, Bukovany, and Citice. The lake was created by flooding and reclamation of the quarry location Medard – Libík after the cessation of brown coal mining. Targeted mining in the area was completed in 2000, but residual mining has continued until this year as part of stabilizing the lake's slope. Medard lake was filled from 2008 to 2016 and has an approximate area of 492 hectares.
According to the councilor of the Karlovy Vary Region and the mayor of Chodov, Patrik Pizinger (Local), the area around Medard offers enormous possibilities not only in terms of leisure activities but also for housing and job opportunities in services and operations that can arise here. "We continue in the preparation for the transformation of the region, which should lead not only to the utilization of new energy sources but should also help improve the living standards of the people who live here and ensure sustainable development in the future," Pizinger stated.
