Prague – The winner of the 17th annual student architecture competition Břetislav Štorm Award is the design Place of Recovery – solitude Kluk by Štěpán Mack. The student proposed to place a community residential social center within a defunct Baroque farmstead in Kokořín. The award, named after the architect, conservationist, graphic designer, and writer Břetislav Štorm, is organized by the Institute of Heritage Care of the Prague Faculty of Architecture, entrepreneur Tomáš Bistřický, and the Czech National Committee Icomos. Jan Štoll informed ČTK about the awarding on behalf of Icomos.
The winning design plans to utilize stones from the sandstone walls of defunct buildings. Traditional gabled roofs and covered porches would be combined with an economical interior. Landscape alterations in the vicinity of the former farmstead would include seating in the forest by a pond, a meditation grove, or a living room in the woods. The community residential facility would serve modern mental health care.
"We appreciated the exceptionally high-quality design for its sensitive integration of new buildings into the local landscape. The use of local traditional building principles along with landscaping interventions creates a harmonious natural environment – crucial for this type of facility," stated jury chairman Václav Girsa.
Second place was awarded to four studio projects proposing the restoration of defunct historical city gates in Český Krumlov. These include the Gothic inner gate on Radniční Street, the inner Kájovská gate, the Latrán gate, and the Upper gate.
Third place went to the project documentation for the restoration of the Orangerie of the State Castle of Zákupy. Students would return the heated orangerie to its original form with careful execution of the necessary new extensions. "The current unkempt state of the castle's orangerie essentially hides a hedge, and the project could resolve this issue," Girsa stated.
An honorable mention was given to the diploma thesis Měděnec – Memory of the Mining Landscape of the Ore Mountains. It addresses the regeneration of the village of Měděnec and its connection with the surrounding landscape, creating necessary facilities for visitors, civic amenities, and supporting residential construction.
The public award was won by a studio design for the renovation of a South Bohemian farmstead in the village of Kroclov near České Budějovice. The farm could gain contemporary use without disrupting its historical character.
The aim of the competition is to encourage student interest in the field of heritage care and to raise the level of their readiness for practice in cultural heritage preservation. The competition rewards the highest quality conceptual studies and projects from students who undertake their semester, bachelor's, and diploma work in the studios of the Institute of Heritage Care at the Faculty of Architecture CTU in Prague.
