New kindergarten and elementary school, a square offering the Sadová neighborhood the necessary public space, along with the surrounding park with playgrounds and new viewpoints. This is the winning design by XTOPIX architects and consequence forma, which was selected by the expert jury of the urban-architectural competition organized by the Office of the Architect of the City of Brno (KAM) at the end of August. Brno city councilors were informed about the complete results and all competition entries during their session today; the public will be able to view them at an exhibition in the Urban center at the Old Town Hall.
"Sadová offers views of Brno and proximity to the valley with the chapel of St. Antoníček, gardening colonies, and many fruit and other trees at the location of the new kindergarten and elementary school. The winning design works with these natural values and places the entire project on several terraces that visually connect the whole area. This will create more generous spaces with views of Brno's skyline, as well as smaller, cozier spots in the schoolyard and garden. The project also aims to preserve valuable existing trees to the greatest possible extent and further complements them," says Brno's mayor Markéta Vaňková.
According to the authors of the winning design, XTOPIX architects and consequence forma, the goal of the project is to create a new public space of local scale at Sadová, which will appeal to residents and visitors, utilize the natural potential of the landscape, and elevate the place to a level that it deserves due to its new significance. At the same time, it will offer an attractive and exceptional place for staying, relaxation, entertainment, and play.
The experience of both studios behind the winning design has already been demonstrated by their previous projects. XTOPIX architects designed the New Elementary School in Komořany and the Kindergarten in Přístavní in Stříbro. According to the project by consequence forma architects, a new park is currently being created in Brno at Moravské náměstí, and the award-winning Sports Hall of the Elementary School in Nový Hrozenkov is already completed.
"The jury appreciated the landscape solution of the winning proposal, including the effort to preserve the original mature trees to the greatest extent possible. In the newly designed park, which will connect the area to the adjacent valley, an entrance gate to the entire hillside will be created, and the school buildings will be surrounded by greenery, while sufficient-sized sports facilities accessible to the public will also be established. The transportation solution for the whole site is bold yet economical," adds city architect Michal Sedláček and director of KAM, which organized the competition. "At the same time, it is a pleasure to say that we as a jury appreciated the high level of execution of all competition entries," he concludes.
"The elementary school will be an accessible building with a maximum capacity of 540 children. Both the first and second stages will have nine base classes with 30 students each. The kindergarten will then serve up to 125 children, for whom five classes will be created," says Jaroslav Suchý, councilor for education and sports.
The entire project is designed into several functional units. "The creation of the new center at Sadová – the square – is independent of other phases, but should be completed along with the elementary school and a new street to the north of this location. Similarly, a park with public playgrounds may begin to develop regardless of the rest of the project. To create the kindergarten campus, a promenade across the park needs to be built, which according to the winning design serves not only visitors but also allows occasional access for deliveries and emergency vehicles," adds councilor Filip Chvátal, detailing each phase of the project.
The public will be able to view all competition entries, including their physical models, at an exhibition in the Urban center in Brno, which KAM is preparing from October 21 to November 30. The opening will take place on October 20, 2022, at 6:00 PM with the participation of the competition winners.

The urban-architectural narrow one-phase design competition was launched on March 18, 2022. The professional jury chose the winner at its two-day session on August 25 and 26, 2022.
