The subject of the competition was to develop a proposal for the urban, architectural, operational, spatial, structural, and technical solutions for the Educational and Visitor Center Podhůra, as a so-called gateway to the Iron Mountains, a parking lot, and the demarcation of outdoor exhibition space, including parts firmly connected to the building and an indicative arrangement of interior furnishings.

Single-round anonymous architectural design competition
Organizer: City of Chrudim and Municipal Forests Chrudim Ltd.
Jury: Radek Kolařík, Josef Smola, Michal Fišer, Miroslav Tejkl, Marek Janatka

Total prizes and rewards: 150,000 CZK

1st prize (100,000 CZK) - proposal no. 9
Lukáš Pavlík, Tomáš Med

Jury's evaluation: A strong and convincing concept. Linear arrangement, low silhouette, emphasized by a strip window, contemporary architectural expression, while maintaining humility and respect for the area into which the new building enters. The retreat from the forest border allows for the placement of parking in a non-disruptive position and sufficient solar gains for the southern façade. The work dominates with a holistic approach, where the energy concept is a natural part of a witty, economical, and space-saving layout and imaginative architectural and structural solutions. A modern wooden building with a load-bearing structure of laminated wood panels, with the structure expressed in the interior, well insulated, is a good prerequisite for meeting passive standards, with a preferred use of renewable energy sources. Investment costs are realistic and correspond to the limits of the assignment. The proposal clearly best met the requirements of the organizer and was awarded first prize.

3rd prize (25,000 CZK) - proposal no. 2
Eugen Řehoř

Jury's evaluation: The jury appreciated the comprehensive approach of the authors, where a simple compact mass with the archetype of a wooden barn or shelter creates an adequate base for the horizon of the forest mass and simultaneously qualifies for low energy consumption. The space in the shade of the forest is efficiently used for parked cars, which thus do not obstruct views of the landscape from the more richly glazed northern façade of the center. A practical sheltered space at the entrance is beneficial; conversely, the principle of a “living hallway” on the ground floor and the only formal character of the gable roof, with unused attic space, appear somewhat questionable. The concept thus generates a large built volume and the associated smaller realism of declared investment costs. The lightweight wooden column system meets the goals of the assignment and could be an alternative solution along with further developments in the field of energy management. In principle, it meets the requirements of the competition organizer and can potentially undergo further optimization. The work was therefore awarded third prize.

3rd prize (25,000 CZK) - proposal no. 21
Petr Macek, Jakub Sedmík

Jury's evaluation: The principle of two main masses with thermally and functionally zoned layout emerging from a paved square platform, connected by a shading grid of a transparent roof, is a possible, but less suitable solution for the project assignment. The disorganized arrangement of the parking lot situated in the sloped area of the site raises questions. According to the jury, the higher silhouette of the building would not appear very harmonious with the forest massif. A definite advantage is the elevated, central, and variable sheltered space for exhibitions and the consideration of views of the city. Generally, the quality spatial layout meets the organizer's expectations. Additionally, the overall impression of an airy garden pavilion is enhanced by the choice of a construction system in the form of a modern wooden building. The authors' comprehensive approach provides a good prerequisite for achieving the stated passive energy standard. The presented cubic cost is less realistic in the chosen solution. However, the concept is capable of further development through partial modifications. The qualities of the proposal were rated with the third prize.
