Lina Bo Bardi

A Journey into Lina Bo Bardi's Creativity – this is the name of the exhibition that will soon kick off at the creative space for design and architecture Konsepti Stage. The installation maps the creative path of Brazilian-Italian modernist architect Lina Bo Bardi. The exhibit is organized by Konsepti in collaboration with the Italian furniture manufacturer Arper. The central object will be a re-edition of the iconic Bowl Chair, which was produced by Arper in a limited quantity of 500 pieces.

Bardi's Bowl Chair
Sculptural, elegant, and timeless – this is how the iconic Bardi’s Bowl Chair could be briefly described. In designing it, the architect aimed to consider the proportions of the human body. In 1951, she then presented two prototypes of a geometric, movable chair defined by a steel frame with four slender legs and a seat of hemispherical, bowl-like shape. The tilt could be easily adjusted with gentle pressure from the feet or hands to accommodate anyone who sat in it. Soon after, the design began to attract international attention – the American magazine Interiors in 1953 compared the chair to works by Eero Saarinen, Irena Siebens, or Robert Mangold.

The re-edition of this iconic piece of furniture, created by the Italian manufacturer Arper, will now be on display as part of the exhibition A Journey into Lina Bo Bardi’s Creativity at the creative space for design and architecture Konsepti Stage in Prague's Holešovice district. Arper partnered with Instituto Bardi | Casa de Vidro and under its supervision created a limited collection of 500 Bowl Chairs.

“The effort to highlight what is essential and functional, the ability to innovate, and to place people at the center of each project: this is what captivated us about Lina Bo Bardi when we first encountered her work,” says Claudio Feltrin, Arper President, regarding what drew the brand to work with the architect's legacy.

The chair retains its design and comfort but is now produced using modern manufacturing methods. The seat, which was originally made of heavy, hand-forged iron, is now made of plastic, making the structure lightweight and simultaneously flexible. The collection includes a variant in black leather and 17 others in colorful upholstery.

“Creating Bardi’s Bowl Chair was a challenge for everyone at Arper that inspired us. We entered into a dialogue with Instituto Bardi, which played the role of design partner and interpreter of Lina’s vision. Our goal was to faithfully reinterpret the design of the chair while also utilizing new technologies to enhance its internal structure. The craftsmanship of Arper then contributed to making each piece special,” Feltrin further explains.

The exhibition is part of the 25th edition of DESIGNBLOK
The exhibition will open to the public on October 4, 2023, coinciding with the launch of the 25th edition of the design and fashion showcase Designblok. The organizers chose the central theme of the journey for this year's edition. This theme is also the motif of the exhibition A Journey into Lina Bo Bardi’s Creativity.

“The theme of the exhibition reflects the theme of Designblok in parallel. I believe it successfully reveals the journey and principles of creation of one strong, creative, and hard-working architect in a nice summary. We are an interior design company, so the exhibition is based on her fundamental work – the Bowl Chair,” clarifies the founder of Konsepti and co-founder of Designblok David Řezníček.

The installation also includes a projection by filmmaker Tapio Snellman titled Lina Bo Bardi: Together, dedicated to the vibrant atmosphere at SESC Pompéia – a former textile factory in São Paulo, Brazil, which Bo Bardi transformed into a cultural complex and meeting place in the late 70s and early 80s.

As part of Designblok itself, Konsepti will appear alongside the Italian brand Magis. In the installation, which visitors will find in Superstudio, the main focus will be on the Chair One – an iconic product for Magis with an aluminum structure that was created using innovative technology previously utilized only in the automotive industry. Chair One is characterized by its purely geometric, almost technocratic design and is recognized for its timelessness, recognizability, and uniqueness.

Installation by Balance is Motion in the courtyard of Holport in Holešovice
Alongside the exhibition, there will also be an installation by the design studio Balance is Motion in the courtyard of the Holešovice Holport, where Konsepti is located. It will utilize, among other things, blocks from the modular system Ruderal – a collection that the studio first introduced to the public at this year's ICFF+WantedDesign Manhattan 2023 in New York.

“In the installation designed by Balance is Motion, guests can observe the journey of creative ideas coming to life. From cosmic matter above the visitors’ heads, representing a field of collective consciousness, ideas gradually emerge and crystallize. In fleeting moments, they transform into a physical, tangible object firmly connected to the ground,” says Eliška Novak Knotková from Balance is Motion about the installation.

The exhibition A Journey into Lina Bo Bardi’s Creativity at Konsepti Stage in Prague's Holešovice will commence on Wednesday, October 4, and will run until November 1, 2023.
