Gallery of Architecture Brno in collaboration with the Jaroslav Fragner Gallery presents an exhibition dedicated to contemporary winery architecture in seven countries or regions of Central Europe titled

Architecture and Wine in Central Europe

The world has fallen in love with wine. Building an attractive winery today is among the prestigious commissions for world architects and studios.

The exhibition showcases four dozen interesting contemporary wineries that have emerged in recent years in Central Europe, connecting contemporary architecture with new technologies in winemaking.

Producers of quality wine have invested in new production technologies, as well as in architecture that suits the new operations and also considers the customer. The architecture of wineries is presented here as both a cultural and social phenomenon, as a connection between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary technologies, as well as progressive design. The selected wineries are unique both for their wine production and their architectural representation of production facilities. The exhibition project responds to new trends in the industry, making wineries an attractive experience for every visitor and helping the development of the respective regions.

The focus of the concept is to present the combination of new (and traditional) production processes with modern architecture and design, which is reflected not only in the interiors but also in the graphics of labels. The exhibition features representatives from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Germany (Saxony), Hungary, Slovenia, and northern Italy (South Tyrol). Individual winemaking operations or wine centers are presented through photographs and plans. Emphasis is also placed on the characteristics of individual wine regions, typical varieties, as well as the final products, including the description of the production and aging of wine, which is processed both by traditional methods (e.g., aging in barrique barrels) and by the latest technological procedures and equipment.
“The greatest boom in the construction of new wineries in the region is currently being recorded primarily in Austria, but this trend is also beginning to appear in the Czech Republic and other winemaking locations in Central Europe. This is related to the overall revival of winemaking and also to the societal appreciation of architecture as a cultural phenomenon. Czech and Moravian winemakers are reaching out to leading architects and engaging in dialogue with them when designing new winemaking complexes, which are becoming new visual icons of winemaking regions,” states Gabriel Kurtis, director of the Gallery of Architecture, about the exhibition.
Part of the project is a publication of the same name (CZ, EN, DE). This traveling exhibition has also been successfully presented in other European countries such as Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, and Italy.

The exhibition will open on Wednesday, July 13, 2016, at 6:00 PM in the Gallery of Architecture Brno and will be open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM until September 2, 2016. Admission to the exhibition is voluntary.
