How to view the current global geopolitical-ecological situation? What role can architecture play in understanding the challenges we face? What do young architects believe needs to be re-evaluated and how can we respond? Five projects from five countries offer ways to rediscover our relationship with the environment, where architecture mediates principles of coexistence and collaboration among people, the environment, architecture, and technology.
“The exhibition Coexist, Coact, Collaborate is the result of research-architectural exploration that aims to open up space for discussion and re-evaluation of social society. It will present a new type of landscape where individual elements function as part of a living system. It focuses more on the relationships between heterogeneous elements in time and space, and their impact on the global situation,” says the curator of the project and head of the Architecture Studio III, who has long been engaged in this issue, Prof. Imrich Vaško.
The exhibited projects will come not only from Prague’s UMPRUM but also from Austria, Germany, France, and Turkey. They focus on air and water quality, as well as on the perception of planet Earth or digitalization and the associated questioning of the contemporary world.
Veronika Miškovičová from UMPRUM explores through her project Instruments of Exchange how we can connect and reconstruct water ecosystems. Glass structures, thanks to technological principles, create a type of ecosystem in which the constant growth of microalgae absorbs carbon dioxide from the surrounding environment while simultaneously producing the oxygen we need.
The project Organ Embodiment by Adam Hudec, a doctoral candidate at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, also researches microscopic processes that are hidden from our senses. This simple bioplastic structure creates an intimate environment free of any microscopic life through the filtration of internal air via a nanotextile. Breathing therapy inside the space provides awareness of what it means to be human.
The quality of the air is also the focus of the project Storytelling Bio.Curtain by Terézia Grešková at the University of Innsbruck. This project is a bio-digital installation that has been created in collaboration with the innovative London firm ecoLogicStudio and presents algae membrane technologies. Its uniqueness lies in exploring how photosynthetic architecture influences not only our experience but also how we feel. The experiences we take with us are recorded using sensors monitoring air quality, documenting the emotional response of visitors to a story called Cyber Yoga.
The perception of the world is the focus of Yelta Köm's projects Recession: Circular Symphony and Milky Way 2021 by the group u2p050. Yelta Köm from Delft University of Technology contemplates the observation of the world and the interconnectedness of people, which is not merely created by established urban structures but also by invisible digital networks. Her video installation tracks, records, and captures new relationships.
The issue of digitalization is also addressed by the group u2p050. A group of six young creators explores thought experiments that open paths to questioning our current world and the growing digitalization. In their perspective, machines become broadly open telescopes.
The exhibition Coexist, Coact, Collaborate is a continuation of the decades-long ambition of the Architecture Studio III at UMPRUM to present the most current trends in the field of international architectural research.
