Prague - The possibilities of utilizing urban public space will be the focus of a new festival that will take place in Prague from Wednesday until mid-September. One of the locations that the Landscape Festival Prague 2014 aims to highlight is the freight station in Žižkov. The second venue of the festival will be at the Jaroslav Fragner Gallery. Visitors can look forward to a series of six exhibitions, lectures, artistic events, and performances - all related to landscape architecture and creations focused on public space.
"Many of the projects are in the area of reclamation, rehabilitation of abandoned parts of the landscape, or industrial areas, urbanization of neglected urban public spaces - all for new, primarily recreational functions and sports activities, for meetings, culture, and education," said Dan Merta, the curator of the Fragner Gallery and one of the festival's authors. He pointed out the exhibition "Landscape from the Second Hand," which showcases the new form of the German industrial landscape and the specifics of green space creation in post-industrial areas,
The exhibition will be accompanied by concerts, various installations, and examples of guerrilla interventions in public space. At the Jaroslav Fragner Gallery, the curators under the title CzechScape will present the most significant creations of Czech landscape architecture with its overlaps into other disciplines over the last 20 years, from private gardens to interventions in public space. They have included more well-known creations from the MCA studio (Bastion in Prague), Josef Pleskot (Jelení příkop), or Cigler Marani Architects in the office complex at Chodov in Prague.
According to the organizers, an enlightening part could be the exhibition focused on the history of the field of Czech landscape architecture, which was shaped by figures such as Ladislav Žák, Ivan Otruba, and Vladimír Sitta.
Other events will also take place in Prague aimed at debating public space, its improvement, or the possibilities of utilizing abandoned buildings that traditionally shaped urban space. From Wednesday to Sunday, the third ReSITE festival will take place in the recently opened building of Karlín Forum. The main professional conference will be complemented by exhibitions, workshops, events in public space, and screenings.
Starting Saturday, the EnviroCity festival will take place in Prague all summer long, initiated by architects and designers from the Collaborative Collective association, and in collaboration with the Institute of Planning and Development of the Capital City of Prague (IPR). The center of the festival will be the Loop pavilion, which will enliven the spaces of the IPR gardens and the Žižkov freight station. The wooden structure was created by students and will serve for lectures as well as theatrical performances.
