After more than twenty years of its existence, after approximately sixty realizations and sixteen significant architectural awards, the Ostrava architectural office PROJEKTSTUDIO presents its first major solo exhibition conceived for the Architecture Gallery in Brno. The curatorial selection "High5" showcases the most prominent realizations of the studio, representing various categories of projects – public buildings, family houses, renovations in a historical complex, their own corporate headquarters, and installations in public spaces. Each of these very different projects has its unique story, which is presented at the exhibition through an architectural "video clip." The video clips for the exhibition were created by young multimedia artists Petr Hostaš, Jan Hubáček, Sampo Siren, and Oskar Stolín. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog, edited by Vendula Šafářová, which complements the High5 selection with an additional 11 projects. Co-founder and undoubtedly the leading personality of Projektstudio David Kotek perceives the current form of the firm primarily as a Foundry of Architecture, where all creations are not subordinate to one architect, but where both permanent and newly incoming team members have equal space to design independently. The youthful spirit of fresh graduates and interns from both Czechia and abroad, along with the long-standing experience of professionals, keeps the production of Projektstudio young, fresh, contemporary, and highly professional. The quality level, from a local perspective, is evidenced by numerous first places and honorable mentions in competitions such as Building of the Year, House of the Year, or Grand Prix of the Association of Architects, but the creations of Projektstudio can also be compared in the context of European and global production, with which they can confidently measure themselves in terms of their relevance and quality of execution. Although the creations of Projektstudio exhibit signs of the global architectural style of the present and its ambitions transcend the regional framework, there is a clearly apparent spirit of Ostrava that makes their production specific and distinctive. The individual phenomena associated with Ostrava and the Ostrava region can thus to some extent be related to Projektstudio and attributed with their characteristics. The speed and aggressiveness of the "sharp" river Ostravice, which gave Ostrava its name. The determination to realize demanding assignments arising from the "steel heart of the republic," as Ostrava was proudly nicknamed, the courage for generous approaches, which we can perceive as the influence of the context – the environment of the generous urban layout of Ostrava and especially its monumental "sorelové" Poruba, where the studio has built its headquarters. The strength and confidence exuding from the rich industrial environment of the region, capable of dealing with complex technological problems – the tempered spirit of the city, its hardness and straightforwardness. The impressive functionality of the omnipresent industrial architecture, which does not lack its aesthetic qualities. Energetic, effective, and provocative like the city's marketing logo – OSTRAVA!!! Not afraid to show itself and make its presence known, to impress, to put on a show, and to look good!!! But also, like Ostrava taught by the consequences of environmental pollution, it comes with projects respecting the environment, with responsible approaches, where ecological thinking is not a fashionable incantation but a necessary life understanding. Because at Projektstudio they also want to "have fun with architecture," their buildings lack heaviness and sarcasm; play is part of the design process. Each project always offers unique conditions for the unrepeatable play of the creation and realization of the building. The fact that Projektstudio does not have a so-called own handwriting, which is sometimes pointed out to them, I see as their greatest advantage, as it allows them to approach each new project freely, relaxed, unburdened by mannerisms and learned clichés, which make the creations of some other studios a gray routine. An important characteristic of Projektstudio is also that they pride themselves on very good, friendly, and trustworthy relationships with their clients, not only during the construction but also primarily after its completion. At Projektstudio, the client also becomes a co-creator, a respected element in the melting pot of the foundry, and an essential ingredient of the design. Behind every building lies a hidden story that connects the lives of Projektstudio and its clients. And these stories are the central theme of the High5 Projektstudio exhibition. Just as the exhibition presents past stories, the catalog adds currently unfolding stories and also promises stories of the future.
