Born in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Josip Plečnik (1872–1957) was one of the most talented and also one of the most unique members of the artistic generation that graduated from the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts in the 1890s and later significantly influenced Central European art at the turn of the century. Architect Plečnik was later connected with the culture of the Czech lands: he taught at the Prague School of Applied Arts, became the first castle architect for T. G. Masaryk, and built one of his most impressive churches, the Church of the Sacred Heart of Our Lord, in Prague as well. He regarded sacred architecture as the pinnacle of artistic achievement. This exhibition of photographs dedicated to the architecture of his numerous churches—whether in Prague, Vienna, Slovenia, or Serbia—features the work of the best expert and interpreter of Plečnik's oeuvre, art historian and former Slovenian ambassador to the Czech Republic, Damjan Prelovšek.
