Prague - Current architecture in the German port city of Hamburg will be brought closer by exhibitions at the Kotelna gallery in Karlín and at the Jaroslav Frágner Gallery (GJF) on Bethlehem Square, which start today. The exhibitions show that the city on the Elbe has become a destination for modern architects and construction visionaries. A whole new district called HafenCity is being created in Hamburg near the center, revitalizing previously neglected areas along the river. Klára Pučerová from GJF told ČTK. The poster for the exhibition projects features a visualization of the design for the Hamburg opera, which will look like a large ship. It was designed by the Herzog & de Meuron studio and is being written about in Germany as one of the most ambitious architectural projects of our time. The HafenCity district is expected to be completed by 2025. The city’s population is set to double, making Hamburg likely the second largest city in Germany. Architects and urban planners have designed residential housing, promenades, hotels, a university, various institutions, and a public transport network for the district. One of the exhibitions at GJF will also introduce designs and realizations from the Berlin studio of architect Jürgen Mayer. Some of the latest projects from the studio include a town hall in Scharnhauser Park in Ostfildern, a student cafeteria at the University of Karlsruhe, and the installation in the square in Seville, Spain (Metropol Parasol). On the occasion of the exhibition project, architect Martin Haas, a partner at Behnisch Architekten, will come to Prague. On November 1, he will give a lecture on ecological architecture at the Goethe Institute. More information about the project is available on the website of the Jaroslav Frágner Gallery www.gjf.cz.
