Berlin - In the square in the center of Berlin, where the communist Palace of the Republic used to stand and where a rough replica of the former imperial palace is to be built, a futuristic hexagon has been constructed for now. The glass building opposite Museum Island is set to serve as an exhibition space and a viewing platform with a café for the next several years. The so-called Humboldt-Box, nearly 30 meters high, will temporarily fill at least part of the vacant space that emerged in the center of the German metropolis after the demolition of the communist Palace of the Republic. The new building is roughly at the level of the former parking lot in front of the palace, which was also home to the East German parliament. Berlin has decided to build a replica of the original landmark of the city, which stood here until the 1950s - the palace of the former Prussian kings and German emperors. It was damaged at the end of World War II and later completely demolished. The new palace, which will crown the cultural and educational complex Humboldt Forum, is expected to be completed by 2019 according to current plans.
