The Copenhagen office of Henning Larsen has won the competition for the design of a new theater in the Dutch city of Emmen, beating out several local firms such as Mecanoo and MVRDV. The newly designed building will simultaneously serve as the main entrance to the Emmen Zoo. The theater is planned to have two halls, offering a total capacity for 1,150 spectators. According to the authors, the design aims to connect culture with nature. The dominant element of the entire structure is the horizontal framing with a flat roof, which rises in the hall areas and perforates at the passage to the zoo. The open space under the roof will also serve as a publicly accessible area in front of the multifunctional halls, with views of both the zoo and the city center. The opening of the entire complex is scheduled for 2015.
