London, October 17 - The ugliest building in the United Kingdom is the Bullring shopping center in Birmingham, dominated by the Selfridges department store designed by architect Jan Kaplický. This is at least the conclusion from a survey that examined the opinions of 1,111 Britons.

Modern architecture and especially the city of Birmingham did not fare well in the survey. In addition to the Bullring shopping center, Birmingham ranked second with its central library and seventh with the highway interchange nicknamed Spaghetti Junction.
The survey was organized by video game manufacturer AE on the occasion of the release of the latest version of its urban simulation game Sim City Creator. Respondents generally expressed dislike for modern architecture - they were surprisingly not fond of the twenty-meter monumental sculpture Angel of the North near Newcastle or the Scottish Parliament building in Edinburgh, which ranked third and fourth, respectively.
Conversely, no one was too surprised by the dislike for the Arndale shopping center in Manchester or the Parkhill housing estates in Sheffield. Liverpool also has two representatives in the top ten ugliest buildings - the Liver Building in sixth place and the cathedral in ninth place.
Nevertheless, Neville Summerfield, who is responsible for city regeneration at Birmingham City Council, defended the Bullring, which opened five years ago. "The design of the Selfridges department store, which has won several awards, has become synonymous with the city's economic growth," he declared. However, he admitted that the library building is "ugly" and the city is looking for ways to demolish it.
The general manager of the shopping center also defended the Selfridges store, which was designed by Kaplický’s studio Future Systems. "It is one of the key images of Birmingham. We compare it to yeast. You either love it or hate it," said manager Tim Walley.
