New York – The sale of the famous New York skyscraper Flatiron Building, known in Czech as Žehlička, has failed. The winner of last week's auction, who bid $190 million (4.1 billion crowns) for the building, did not pay the $19 million deposit on time. This was reported by the DPA agency.

The highest bid for the Žehlička, one of Manhattan's most beloved landmarks, was originally made by investor Jacob Garlick. Now, the auctioneer, who offered the second highest amount of $189.5 million, has a chance to buy the skyscraper. If he refuses, a new auction will be held, writes DPA.

The auction of the building was ordered by the court due to the fact that its five current owners have been unable to agree for years on necessary repairs or on how the building should be used in the future. The skyscraper is nearly empty due to the lack of repairs. Previously, it was fully rented by the publishing house Macmillan.

The skyscraper, with a triangular footprint, measures 90 meters and was opened in 1920. It stands at the intersection of Fifth Avenue, Broadway, and 23rd Street.
