City Hall in Nieuwegein by 3XN

On March 6, 2006, the Danish office 3XNielsen won the international competition for the design of the town hall in Nieuwegein (south of Utrecht). The town hall, with a total area of 22,600 m², will be located near a public library, cultural center, and commercial zone. Kim Herforth Nielsen from 3XN adds about the project: “Public administration close to commercial shops will be in contact with everyday life. We also tried to meet the requirement of openness and transparency that every democratic institution should bring.” The spiral design by 3XN with a giant atrium inside defeated many domestic architects such as Claus en Kaan, Neutelings Riedijk, or Kraaijvanger Urbis.
