In the Berlin Neue Nationalgalerie, the opening of the exhibition 'Stick and Stones' will take place on Wednesday, October 1, 2014, at 8:00 PM. This is the last event before a complete reconstruction, which is set to begin next year. The curator of the final exhibition and the author of the reconstruction of the most significant European realization by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in the post-war period is London-based architect David Chipperfield. In the upcoming three months, visitors will be able to walk through the upper glazed gallery, where the eight original steel columns will additionally be complemented by 144 wooden trunks. This will create a dense grid of eight-meter-long barkless trunks extending from the granite floor to the steel roof structure. The exhibition's title refers to the two main elements that Mies used in his design for the Neue Nationalgalerie: columns or rods (stick) and stones (stones). Mies's steel beams in the abundance of other columns will lose their privileged function and will, similar to tree trunks, become further exhibits. In the middle of Chipperfield's 'forest', there will be a 'clearing' of 200 m², where various interdisciplinary events overlapping with architecture will take place. Among them will be the 'Festival of Future Nows' from the Institute of Spatial Experimentation at Berlin's UdK, led by Olafur Eliasson. The exhibition 'Stick and Stones' at the Berlin Neue Nationalgalerie will last until December 31, 2014.
