Amsterdam studio NL Architects applied an unconventional solution in the design of a new gymnasium 'TNW Turnaccommodatie Nieuw Welgelegen' for Utrecht, featuring a 'bent' facade that not only aims to evoke the flexible bodies of gymnasts inside but, above all, to ensure ample pleasant diffuse light in the sports hall. It is in this context that the two-story raw building receives its envelope. The opened mass is intended to resemble “a tulip letting light and air through its roof.” This solution also eliminates external stimuli and unwanted distractions for athletes training hard inside. Once completed, the gymnastics hall will serve four different departments.
