Manama - Today in Bahrain, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee has started its session, which will decide on the inscription of new cultural and natural heritage sites on the World Heritage list. During the meeting, which will last until July 4, the committee will also decide whether the Czech city of Žatec, with its rich history associated with hop cultivation, will be included on the prestigious list.

This year, around thirty natural and cultural monuments are nominated for inscription. In addition to Žatec, the prestigious UNESCO designation is also sought by, for example, the cemeteries and memorials from the First World War in France and Belgium, the historical core of the French city of Nîmes, the cathedral in the German city of Naumburg, the Turkish archaeological site Göbekli Tepe, a set of Victorian-style and art deco buildings in Mumbai, India, and the old town of Indonesia's capital Jakarta.

In addition to the inscription of new sites, the committee is expected to evaluate the status of those places that have been added to the list in the past. The historic center of the city of Shakhrisabz in Uzbekistan could be removed, and the national park around Lake Turkana in Kenya or the valley where the Nepalese capital Kathmandu is located could be added to the endangered sites list.

The nomination of Žatec has been gradually evaluated since 2017. Alongside it, the Mining Region of Krušnohoří from the Czech Republic is also seeking inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage list since the beginning of this year. In the second half of the year, they plan to submit the nomination documentation for the Famous Spas of Europe, which includes, among others, Karlovy Vary, Františkovy Lázně, and Mariánské Lázně.

The Czech Republic currently has 12 entries on the UNESCO World Heritage sites list. In addition to the historical centers of Prague, Telč, and Český Krumlov, these include the Lednice-Valtice Area, the castle in Litomyšl, and the Brno functionalist villa Tugendhat.
