The Council of the Architects' Association nominated four architects for awards presented by the International Union of Architects (UIA) this February. One of them was Prof. Ing. Arch. Vladimír Šlapeta, who was nominated by the council for the Jean Tschumi Prize for architectural writing and criticism.

Ing. Arch. Vladimír Šlapeta is currently regarded as one of the leading architectural historians. He is also recognized for his extraordinary contributions as a teacher, subsequently as the dean of the Faculty of Architecture at ČVUT in Prague and VUT in Brno, through his publications, organization of exhibitions, etc. He was also the vice-rector of ČVUT in Prague, which he graduated from. During the normalization period, he was unable to publish under his own name, but his publications were highly popular abroad. Only after the revolution did his name become recognized in our country as well.

The Jean Tschumi Prize was also awarded to Danish architect Anne Beim.

Oleg Haman, chairman of the Architects' Association, commented on the award: “I am very pleased that we managed to convert one of the four submitted nominations for the International Union of Architects awards. The council of the architects' association selected and nominated outstanding architects who operate on an international scale. All four nominees deserved the award, but we know that it is selected from nominations submitted from all over the world, so the competition is really tough. This makes me even happier that the award was given to Prof. Ing. Arch. Vladimír Šlapeta, to whom I sincerely congratulate.”

The International Union of Architects awards are given every three years. The announcement of this year’s edition will take place at the World Congress in Copenhagen, which will occur at the beginning of July.
