Brno – Brno will offer a municipal apartment in the center covering nearly 120 m² for shared living for students. This is being done for the first time, but it is based on the experience with seniors, for whom shared living has proven successful. New tenants will be required to register their permanent residence in the apartment within two months of moving in. This was stated in a press release by Deputy Mayor for Housing Karin Podivinská.
The city has difficulty renting out large apartments as regular municipal ones. "We have therefore started to transform them into shared living spaces. Until now, we have focused on seniors, for whom this provides an opportunity to maintain privacy while also having company nearby. However, with this apartment, we had to look for another solution because it is on the second floor and there is no elevator; it can only be accessed via a narrow spiral staircase. Creating a space for students, for whom shared living is common, was a logical step," said Mayor Markéta Vaňková.
The four-room apartment will cost 96 crowns per square meter per month, and it should be shared by three to six people. "All group members must be under 30 and must study at a university in full-time mode. Applications for the apartments will be accepted in November, and we will draw new tenants from the submitted applications. They will need to register their permanent residence in the apartment within two months of moving in. This is crucial for the city in terms of budget tax allocation, as the city receives funds for each registered citizen," Podivinská stated.
She hopes that alongside starter apartments for individuals and couples, this will be another step towards making municipal housing more accessible to young people. "We are encountering the fact that many are unaware of the options for municipal housing that could significantly help them in the future to resolve their housing situation and stabilize themselves. We are trying to change that," added the deputy.
