Brno - Two homes with social services for seniors with a total of 90 apartments will be built in the coming years in Brno, costing more than 120 million crowns. This was said today by the mayor's deputy Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL) to reporters. One home will be created by renovating two apartment buildings on Milady Horákové Street and will offer up to 70 apartments. The second will be in the former kindergarten on Pod Nemocnicí Street in the Bohunice district, where 20 apartments will be created. According to Hladík, the city is establishing homes with social services for about a thousand apartments. However, Brno has recorded the same number of requests for inclusion.

The council today approved the plans for renovations on both streets. The houses on Milady Horákové Street are in poor condition, and therefore cannot be fully utilized. In one house, one apartment is occupied and three non-residential units are in use, while in the second, all apartments are uninhabited and only non-residential spaces are rented out.

According to Hladík, the Ministry of Culture is deciding on the declaration of one of the houses as a cultural monument. "Further preparation of the buildings for renovation will depend on the ministry's declaration. In any case, our goal is to preserve the valuable elements of the façade. However, the designation would bring complications during the renovation," he added.

The buildings will not only be renovated for about 100 million but will also have two additional floors added. The structures will then form one cohesive complex. The non-residential spaces will be preserved on the first floor. "Thanks to the renovation and the addition, we would acquire 60 to 70 small apartments for seniors," Hladík added. He expects the actual work to begin in 2019.

A home with social services will also be created for 24 million in the former kindergarten building in Bohunice. The building recently served a private university, but now the spaces are unused. "The house will have about 20 apartments, community spaces, facilities, and a clubroom," said Hladík. The building is expected to start operating by the end of 2018.

The city aims to meet the demand for homes. "There are about 900 people on the list of applications who would like to live in such barrier-free housing. Our goal is to increase the capacity by 250 to 300 apartments by 2020 to meet the demand of those who would like to move in immediately. Some are applying early," said Hladík. Some applications also overlap. According to him, the city wants to build homes on Minská, Vojtova, Cejl, or Bedřichovická streets as well.
