Brno - Brno will reconstruct the branch of the Jiří Mahen Library in the Bystrc district for 21 million crowns. The work could start in the summer and finish in a year, said Richard Mrázek, the mayor's deputy (ANO), to ČTK today. According to him, the condition of the building is poor, but thanks to the reconstruction, it will serve for several more decades.

Brno city councilors are looking for a company to carry out the work. "The building is now, so to speak, past its prime both structurally and technically. We will insulate the external envelope and the roof, replace the windows and doors, and completely reconstruct the internal systems, including new air conditioning," Mr. Mrázek said.

The library will also undergo layout modifications and the roofing of the internal atrium with a skylight, which serves as a light-enhancing element. "It is already clear from all this work that it is a complete reconstruction. We expect that the library will be like new and can serve visitors for several more decades," Mr. Mrázek stated. The project is co-financed from the Operational Program Environment. The estimated grant is nearly three million crowns, with the remainder being covered by the city.

The Jiří Mahen Library in Brno has been established by the city since 1921. It is the largest public city library in Moravia. Its collection includes around 800,000 books of all genres. According to information from the library's website, around 40,000 readers register there each year, making over 600,000 visits and about two million loans. The library operates approximately 30 branches within the city. The main building on Kobližná Street was renovated by the city a few years ago for 25 million crowns. For this money, a new hall for 100 people was created, and the library also expanded its services and opening hours.
