Prague - The Czech Award for Architecture, granted by the Czech Chamber of Architects (ČKA), will feature a new trophy made by the Bomma glassworks. The winners of the competition for the new trophy design are the duo Lenka Damová & Boris Klimek, who named their design Tubus 01. Their victory was decided by a jury led by glassmaker Rony Plesl, as reported today by ČTK on behalf of ČKA, its spokesperson Barbora Sedlářová. Several variations of the Tubus will be awarded to the recognized architectural works, which can be submitted until April 8. The announcement will take place on November 13, 2025.
The trophy design competition attracted 70 designers, glassmakers, architects, and high school students with 78 proposals. The goal of this open competition was to create an original trophy that reflects not only the high level of Czech glass craftsmanship but also its connection to architectural creation. The jury, which also included the chairman of ČKA Jan Kasl, evaluated originality, aesthetic and craft quality, the relationship to architecture, as well as practicality. According to Plesl, the winning design is original and can be clearly distinguished from similar awards.
"The author excellently takes into account both the tradition of the field and the contemporary modern expression. The award is photogenic, completed very professionally both aesthetically and functionally. The jury recommends that the author finalize the opening and closing of the tube and possible wall mounting," Plesl stated.
Damková and Klimek were inspired by tubes for architectural drawings, and thus the trophy represents the architectural profession. The tube can serve as a container for both the drawings and the diploma from the Czech Award for Architecture. "The diploma could be graphically designed like a design drawing – with a table, dimensions, and a legend,” suggested the authors of the tube.
In second place was Monument by Ondřej Lalák, while the third-best proposal was from the duo Jan Magasanik and Matěj Nedvěd, named after the architectural principles of Firmitas Utilitas Venustas, which translates loosely to strength, utility, beauty.
The reward for winning the competition will be 30,000 crowns, with an additional 20,000 crowns for the license. The second place winner will receive 20,000 crowns, and the third will receive 10,000 crowns.
The award will be produced by Bomma glassworks in Světlá nad Sázavou. The technologies involved include hand-blowing, pressing, machine and hand grinding, sandblasting, engraving, gold plating, and painting on glass. The previous trophy awarded was made by Moser glassworks.
The Czech Award for Architecture grants one main prize, with up to 17 other accolades potentially awarded. This year's tenth edition was announced on January 21, with submissions accepted until April 8, the nomination evening taking place in June and the gala evening in November. Last year, the main prize was awarded to the realization of the Concert Hall in Karlovy Vary, authored by Petr Hájek, Nikoleta Slováková, and Martin Stoss from the studio Petr Hájek Architekti.
