Prague - Twenty years ago, on May 29, 2000, giant figures of crawling black babies by sculptor David Černý adorned the Žižkov Television Tower. A year later, this series of sculptures titled Babies was permanently installed there. In 2017, the babies were removed from the transmitter for maintenance and restoration. Completely new babies were created and mounted on the tower in late March 2019.
The babies were originally created for installation on the building of the Museum of Modern Art in Chicago and later appeared on various buildings around the world. As part of the Prague European City of Culture 2000 project, ten babies were temporarily installed on the Žižkov Television Tower. One sculpture weighs 190 kilograms and measures 3.4 meters in length, 2.4 meters in height, and 1.2 meters in width.
The babies on the tower are liked by many, although their first installation also provoked negative reactions. However, many of their fans do not know them up close, as they can be seen, for example, on Kampa, where the sculptures stand freely on the grass. They are not as cute as most people think - their faces are deformed into barcodes.
