To understand and illustrate the scale and proportions, David Kotek from the Ostrava architectural office PROJEKTSTUDIO decided to erect a model of the Cheops pyramid at a 1:1 scale in the context of the city's block structure and in relation to the human scale. The entire project will last for one month (August 27 - September 25, 2010) in the center of Ostrava around Masaryk Square. The pyramid will be erected using light beams that will outline its edges. The lighting technology is provided by the main partner of the event, THORN Lightning CS. The spotlights will be anchored at four points symbolizing the corners of the pyramid, with bases made from bales of compressed metal scrap at the scale of the actual blocks of the pyramid. As for the dimensions of the pyramid, it is a pyramid with a square base, each side measuring 230 meters in length and a height of 147 meters. The beams will be illuminated daily simultaneously with the public lighting. For a month, the pyramid will become a measure of the contemporary European city - Ostrava. A structure that is always seen and understood as a solitary will thus be confronted with our everyday life and perception of scale and proportions around us. The event will be supported by various accompanying activities. Plans include activities in cooperation with the Ostrava 2015 project, an exhibition on ancient Egypt in collaboration with the Institute of Egyptology at Masaryk Square (in negotiation), and a series of lectures. The project, with its minimal operational and spatial needs, is also prepared for relocation to other cities within the Czech Republic and across Europe in the future.
