Chrudim - The area of the former summer cinema behind the Regional Museum in Chrudim is set to transform into a park where public events could take place. The Chrudim Town Hall today presented a study by the Prague architectural office Ateliér K2, which plans to surround the triangular "peninsula" bordered by the Chrudim River and its channel with greenery. The central part of the triangular plot will remain open. Thus, the concerns of part of the public that a large parking lot or hotel would be built in this area did not come true.
According to the architects' vision, the area will transform into a "Chrudim Central Park," where city residents could relax or have a picnic. In contrast to its current form, the publicly accessible area is expected to expand to include a section behind the large projection wall that still stands behind the museum building. The sandstone sculptures will remain in their places, and wooden play structures for children are expected to be added. A path should run around the entire projection, with access provided not only by the current footbridge from Lázeňská Street but also by a newly constructed bridge connecting the area through the courtyards with Poděbradová Street, and for pedestrians, a footbridge at the tip of the peninsula. The gentle slope, where the audience seats once stood, is to be replaced with colorful paving, and the area could accommodate about 60 cars, although parking would be time-limited.
The Prague architectural office was given a brief by the city based on earlier public discussions. During these discussions, suggestions also emerged for a stage to be built behind the summer cinema where concerts and other cultural events could take place. Cultural events could occur both on the paved surface and on the green space in the park.
Films were last screened at the Chrudim summer cinema in 2005. Since then, the area, which could accommodate up to a thousand people at once for films, has been closed. This year, films were screened outdoors in an improvised summer cinema called Prachárna near the Ressel Square walls.
