Prague - Today, workers were removing food stalls in front of the entrance to the Main Train Station building. The stalls are disappearing due to a planned renovation of the building's façade, which will begin in the spring, said Markéta Krausová from the press department of Czech Railways to ČTK today. There are no plans to return them. All food kiosks will gradually be removed from the station and will be replaced by new shops, cafes, and restaurants.
As part of the reconstruction, stalls inside the hall of the main station will also disappear. The railways are gradually terminating contracts with current tenants, some of whom left the station at the end of last year.
"The stalls do not fit with the new appearance of the station. Moreover, they were a gathering place for homeless people," said Martin Hamšík, spokesperson for Grandi Stazioni, which is reconstructing the building. According to Hamšík, new areas for refreshments, restaurants, and cafes will be created inside the building after the reconstruction.
The renovation of the Main Train Station building began last year and is expected to last five years. Grandi Stazioni plans to invest 850 million crowns into the repairs, and is currently focused on the northern part of the check-in hall.
In addition to the building, the platforms and tracks are gradually being reconstructed. The investor is the state organization Administration of Railway Transport, while the construction is handled by a consortium of companies including Metrostav, Skanska, and Construction of Roads and Railways. The repairs will cost 1.6 billion crowns and will be completed this December.
