Prague - The underpass under the Negrelli Viaduct in Křižíkova Street will be closed to cars and pedestrians from today until Tuesday, May 8. The reason is the next phase of reconstruction, during which part of the viaduct will be removed. The modernization of the Negrelli Viaduct began last summer and will last three years. It is being carried out by the Railway Infrastructure Administration (SŽDC).

According to SŽDC, it is not possible to remove the bridge from the pillars as a single unit, so it will be necessary to demolish the concrete basin and then remove the reinforced concrete beams. Therefore, the underpass must be closed for safety reasons. The intersection and the area under the bridge can be bypassed by Prvního pluku and Za Poříčskou branou streets and detours along the marked routes.

The new bridge will be built by the Hochtief company, which is carrying out the viaduct reconstruction for SŽDC, by the end of the year. The dismantling of the entire 1100-meter-long viaduct began this February with the removal of the part over Prvního pluku Street. Last year, workers removed the installations and extensions of the viaduct, took down the track superstructure and overhead lines.

The Negrelli Viaduct is the first railway bridge in Prague over the Vltava River and the second oldest standing bridge in Prague. It connects Masaryk Station via Štvanice Island with Bubny. The construction was put into operation at the beginning of June 1850 and is a protected monument. It is named after engineer Alois Negrelli, who oversaw the construction.
