Jablonec nad Nisou – Jablonec nad Nisou wants to involve the public in the preparation of the revitalization project for the Bílá Nisa. People will have the opportunity to influence the area between the fire station on Palackého street and the Penny store on Ivana Olbrachta street. The city will take their suggestions into account in the briefing for the landscape-architectural competition being prepared, said Jana Fričová, spokesperson for the city hall, today to ČTK. The planning meeting with the public will take place on Monday, October 7, in the dining hall of the Mozartova Primary School.

The riverbed of the Bílá Nisa was straightened and concreted by water management experts in the 1980s, which led to the loss of the original character, worsening conditions for aquatic and riparian plants and animals, and a decrease in biodiversity. "The goal of the revitalization is to remove the concrete channel and create a nature-friendly solution that brings the river closer to its natural flow, supports biodiversity, and improves the microclimate of the area. Part of the plan also includes enhancing recreational use of the site, so its restoration benefits both nature and people," added the Deputy Mayor Lenka Opočenská (Together for Jablonec).

In particular, the area on the bank opposite the fire station has, according to the city leadership, great potential for nature and calmer human activities. According to the Deputy Mayor for Development Jakub Chuchlík (Pirates), the city is now preparing a landscape-architectural competition. "The key underlying document for the interdisciplinary teams of experts that will propose the site’s design is the water management feasibility study currently being processed. It will assess what modifications are possible and realistic within the revitalization considering the limits of the area or flood protection," said Chuchlík.

According to Opočenská, about a kilometer-long section of the Bílá Nisa in Jablonec's Mšeno area should undergo modifications in the future. "The result should be a beautiful, meandering, nature-friendly watercourse with greenery and some visitor infrastructure that will have recreational potential," added Deputy Mayor Opočenská regarding the plan. However, the city wants to gather as many suggestions as possible from the public and other affected entities regarding the future form and use of the area to ensure the outcome best meets their needs.

The city will derive the revitalization solution from the international project ReBioClim, which it has joined. The main partner is the Technical University of Dresden; according to Opočenská, other participants include institutions like the Leibniz Institute in Dresden, Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem, Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, and the University of Life Sciences in Poznań. "It is not a project for a single election term," added the Deputy Mayor.
