House on Wheels - On the Way to John Hejduk - Book Launch
The Faculty of Architecture of CTU in Prague cordially invites you to the book launch of The Rolling House – On the Road to John Hejduk, which will take place on Thursday, November 18, 2021, at 7:00 PM in the left hall (U jelena) of the Faculty of Architecture of CTU in Prague, Thákurova 9. A discussion about the work and legacy of John Hejduk will be part of the program.
The publication presents an object that stands in the courtyard in front of the Faculty of Architecture in Prague. It was created at the request of the faculty dean Ladislav Lábus in 2019 as part of a design-build project by the Seho–Světlík studio of the Department of Design II at the Faculty of Architecture of CTU, based on sketches by John Hejduk from the book Vladivostok. Students designed and constructed The Rolling House according to a selected sketch.
John Hejduk was a significant American educator and architect with Czech roots. He served as the dean of the School of Architecture at Cooper Union College in New York for a quarter of a century. He was a member of the New York Five, one of the pillars of the postmodern scene. In addition to a few realized buildings, he created, either himself or with his collaborators and students, objects – Masks – that balance on the border of architecture and sculpture.
The publication also addresses the conceptual background of the artist, which will be the subject of a discussion with the motto “What Hejduk Gave Me.” Ladislav Lábus and colleagues from the authorship of the New Building of CTU, where the Faculty of Architecture is located, Alena Šrámková, Lukáš Ehl, and Tomáš Koumar, will speak about the history of the installation's placement in front of the faculty. Online guests of the evening will include John Hejduk's daughter Renata Hejduk and his collaborators Steven Hillyer, Kim Shkapich, and James Williamson. Architect Jiří Boudník, a graduate of Cooper Union, will reminisce about his teacher.
