The ecological center in Pardubice will be surrounded by tree crowns

Pardubice - The Ecological Visitor Center in Pardubice will be surrounded by surrounding trees on one side. People will find themselves in their crowns. The three-story building, inspired by the shape of a spider web, is being constructed on the banks of the Chrudimka River and is set to be completed this summer. This was stated to ČTK by one of the authors of the design, Tomáš Med.
"We wanted to provide people with the experience of being in the treetops. We designed a building that offers new spatial contexts and a visual experience,” explained Med, who created the design together with architects Jaroslav Krupa and Filip Klozar.
The building, shaped like the basic lines of a spider web, will have a gray-red color. Each floor is slightly rotated compared to the one below it. This has created a system of cantilevers that will cover outdoor classrooms and also enable the creation of a viewing terrace. One arm of the wooden structure arches over the cycle path and touches the crowns of the trees.
The basement made of monolithic concrete is being constructed below the level of the flood protection embankment, and the ceiling of the rooms is slightly above its top. The other two floors are wooden. They consist of a wall system made of glued wood, which, according to the authors, is a progressive construction technology of the present. "We aimed to showcase new trends in the field. One of the themes of contemporary construction is the ecological footprint left on the planet by building a house. Every product has some ecological footprint, and with wood, it is minimal compared to other technologies,” Med said.
The building will be fully accessible with an elevator. It will provide facilities for several classrooms where educational and awareness programs and seminars will be held, not just for children and youth.
The Ecocenter Paleta has received a grant from the European Union, the regional authority, and two foundations for the project valued at 40 million crowns. The director of the center, Jiří Bureš, estimates that the new visitor center will attract between 30,000 and 50,000 visitors annually. In the Czech Republic, it will be unique in its scope, as other ecocenters mainly focus on the local protected areas.
"We will deal with the protected areas of Natura 2000 not only in the Pardubice region but also in a European context. We plan exhibitions and displays on nature, the environment, the relationship between humans and nature, or competitions. We will focus on all age groups,” Bureš said.
