Bohuslav Fuchs

The Beautification Association is releasing another issue of the bulletin Beautiful Ostrava, and on that occasion, it will adorn the department store designed by one of the most significant architects and urban planners of interwar Czechoslovakia, Bohuslav Fuchs, located at Masaryk Square in Ostrava. The Beautification Association For Beautiful Ostrava will display an informative plaque in the window of this valuable Fuchs creation.

The launch of the bulletin and the beautification will take place on Friday, March 20, 2015, at 6:00 PM at Masaryk Square.

Bulletin Beautiful Ostrava, issue 1/2015
In the spring, Ostrava is commemorating several anniversaries, both historical and artistic. The theme of World War II is addressed in the new issue of the bulletin Beautiful Ostrava by historian Ondřej Kolář with an article about education in occupied Ostrava. We will remember the Vítkovice-born Jewish poet Ilse Weber, who died in a concentration camp, and curator Martin Mikolášek will insightfully and perhaps somewhat provocatively examine the work of Helena Salichová. In April, it will be five years since the death of the Ostrava writer Jan Balabán. This issue of Beautiful Ostrava features texts from his close friends.
Through its activities and articles, the beautification association also wants to challenge a certain cliché. Ostrava is often perceived only as the "steel heart of the republic." In the new issue, you will find several articles that instead portray Ostrava as an important spiritual center. Historian Martin Jemelka writes about religious movements in Ostrava, while Pavel Březinský examines the Marian cult in our city.
Since its founding, the beautification association has also been dedicated to mapping statues and works in public space. By the end of this year, it will launch the Database of Ostrava's statues and works in public space, including an interactive and printed map. A small preview of what you will find on the map is an article by Jakub Ivánek about the statues in Ostrava-Hrabůvka.
In the new issue, you will also find many other articles and visual supplements. The bulletin will be available at the launch on March 20 at 6:00 PM at Masaryk Square and will then be available upon request starting Monday, March 23, at the Antiquarian and Club Fiducia and the Academia bookstore in Ostrava, and in Prague at the Za starou Prahu club bookstore in Juditina Tower.
We sincerely thank the Printo printing house for the printing. We thank Mr. Tomáš Řežáb for his willingness and cooperation in the beautification of Bohuslav Fuchs's building.
