Festival

The Landscape Festival will take place this year in Prague from June 21 to October 2, this time under the subtitle Unused/Used Train Stations in Prague. The event, which traditionally addresses the broad contexts of architecture, landscape, public space, and art, will focus this time on the transformations of four Prague transport and infrastructure nodes: the Žižkov Freight Station, the Libeň and Palmovka stops, the area between Florenc, Masaryk Station, and Krenovka, and also Smíchov Station. Right in these locations undergoing transformations, the Landscape Festival will present dozens of artistic-architectural interventions and works by renowned creators as well as students from art schools and architecture. Their interventions will offer a revitalization and original perspective on significant places in Prague. For four months, these locations will be interestingly enriched by works from Dominik Lang, Čestmír Suška, Miloš Šejn, Roman Franta, Lenka Klodová, Matěj Frank, Tim, Epose 257, Benedikt Tolar, or studios like Kamil Mrva architects, Prodesi/Domesi, or ARCHWERK.  The Landscape Festival Prague 2022 will open on June 21 with an international seminar Landscape – City – Public Space, dedicated to activities in public spaces, and a vernissage of exhibitions in the Žižkov Freight Station premises. The festive opening of the festival will then take place one day later on June 22, when bands Nauzea Orchestra, Ty Syčáci, Koňe, and Prase will perform at the beginning of the bike path under Vítkov in Příběnická Street. The TANEC PRAHA festival will join with a presentation of Focus Ukraine. More information at www.landscape-festival.cz.

The organizers have selected four locations for this year's festival that are undergoing complete urban and architectural transformation, each in a different urban area and at a different stage of transformation. The four Prague transport brownfields Smíchov Station, the area around Florence, Palmovka, and the Žižkov Freight Station are experiencing active developer and activist movements but mainly exist in a general mode of expectation regarding whether they will exemplify quality urban development in the metropolis, including enlightened integration of visual art into the emerging new public spaces or whether there will be sufficient affordable housing which would lead to greater social inclusion. The Landscape Festival aims to describe the current situation through the lens of festival acupuncture and offer visitors its perspective, in cooperation with landowners or investors, urban planners, architects, and artists. And also, of course, with politicians from both the larger Prague and the city districts to which the designated areas belong. It should be noted that the demanding dialogue is often not helped by the post-COVID effect or the current economic situation.

The Žižkov Freight Station
In the broader location of the NNŽ, a new neighborhood is to be created over the decade with around 20,000 inhabitants. The center of social life will be the unique functionalist railway building. Meanwhile, in the space at Basilejské náměstí, a Park District is being built and expert and political debates are taking place about the form of the underlying study. The prominent Czech artist Petr Písařík has his studio in the front building, and his work should flow into the additional spaces of the area as part of the Landscape Festival. Other authors will also present their site-specific installations here: for example, MÓD Architekti will inflate a Perspective Bubble, and Kurt Gebauer will contribute to the infrastructure with his WC CZ

Palmovka – Libeň Stop
This transportively very complicated location is still waiting for transformation into a fully-fledged area, and current activities of all stakeholders raise hope. This urban jungle still retains its charm, albeit not like in the days of Hrabal, Bondy, and Boudník. In his honor, the work of Čestmír Suška will pay tribute within the Landscape Festival, and in the area, Awakened Consciousness Aleš Hnizdil, Pavilion Record! of the ARCHWERK studio, SUVole Benedikt Tolar, or The Place Where the Sky Hides Dominik Lang will be visible.

Florenc – Masaryk Station – Krenovka
The most complicated transport hub in Prague offers nostalgic remembrance in the cult film Florenc 13:30, but how to create its image in the 21st century is not an easy nut to crack. With a new cultural and social program under the Negrelli Viaduct, the vision of Museum Mile that will begin at the top of Vítkov, include, for example, the Ponec Theatre and the Railway Museum, and lead visitors to Wenceslas Square may perhaps be fulfilled. During the festival, there will be appearances, for example, Chance for Imagination Lenka Klodová or the installation Let There Be Light by the group Prague Idiots. A wooden Pavilion Prodesi/Domesi named I’m the Future, Wooden Architecture. will also be created on the border of Karlín and Florence.

Smíchov Station
In this location, dialogue between the professional public, investors, and politicians is essentially conducted in the manner customary in developed Europe, and the broader Smíchov station area has a chance to become another natural center of Prague 5. Site-specific works here as part of the Landscape Festival will be offered by Kamil Mrva Architects with their Small Observation Tower, Petra Vlachynská with Vrcholovka, Miloš Šejn with Suit Smíchov Station, and the sculpture Annoyed and Surprised Vít Čechmánek will also be on display.

Accompanying Program and Exhibitions
As is traditional, the festival will also include exhibitions. Visitors will be able to view presentations of development projects of the broader NNŽ location titled A Great Place to Live and the exhibition Polis: Seven Lessons from the European Award for Urban Public Space at the Žižkov Freight Station premises, while the Vision Palmovka exhibition will be located on Zenklova Street, Prague 8 will present its current projects in the Record! Pavilion, and the development of Prague 5 will be the focus of an exhibition at the Radlické Kulturní Sportovně. The presentation of the Florenc 21 study will be visible in the area in front of the Museum of the Capital City of Prague. In the rich accompanying program of this year's Landscape Festival, we will find an international seminar on activities in public space Landscape – City – Public Space on June 21 or a conference Green Roofs and Facades – Trends and Synergies, and throughout the festival, there will be Walks with Josef Vomáčka dedicated to the industrial past, present, and future. In September, there will be expert debates on individual locations. The festival will symbolically close on September 20 with a concert by Summer Bands with Jaromír Švejdík and other performers in the premises of the Žižkov Freight Station.
